Goodbye free MOOCs

I noticed in the past 6 months that Coursera.org was switching over to an uglier, uncomfortable and constricted courseware format, and also that courses offering a free Statement Of Accomplishment were harder to find.  I didn’t realize that this ugly format was the “new platform”, and that the format I grew to know and love was going away along with beloved free Statement Of Accomplishment.  It turns out this also happened at EdX.  But not on Stanford Online, god bless them.  Stanford is where Coursera was born, but I guess Coursera eventually had to turn a profit.  Stanford is rich enough to indulge in some noblesse oblige, rare among most private colleges.  NYU, for example, is beefing up it’s online presence, but strictly for the Benajmins, charging same rate as in-person classes.
